This week spent it all in workshop mode working on our pecha kucha projects. I enjoyed the project and had some fun doing it. I felt confident in my project even though I was a little nervous with how it'd turn out. I felt as if it turned well though. When working I had to try my absolute hardest to stay on task and improve my presentation more and more everyday. I watched nearly 5 TED Talks during this workshop week and the worst part was I didn't use any of them as my outside sources. I ended up using a quote from Abe Lincoln and an image that to me displayed the power of the electorate easily. To me, the hardest part of this project was definitely knowing what to talk about and how to say what you want to. The images were also pretty hard because you needed them to match your point and get across what you're trying to say in an interesting way. The outside sources also weren't real easy. It was kinda of hard to find sources where you can easily display their beliefs and stand points on the topic. Then I decided to connect them to my book and that wasn't always the easiest. It's also hard when you're presenting to time your talking with the slides.

This week we were fully introduced to our next project which is a pecha kucha presentation about our subject; shared leadership and the power of the electorate. The presentation is supposed to be a slideshow that contains ten slides that are all displayed for 20 seconds. Within our slides we are supposed to address 5 given questions and use them as topics to talk about in our presentation. I've slowly gained in an interest in this project and I'm kinda getting excited to attempt it. One thing I'm worried about is finding good outside sources that help communicate the message I will be trying to get across. I would also want to find sources that are unique and I don't think anyone else will use. I think this project will be really nice to see how my classmates and I feel about this subject. It'll also be a good way to view everyone's creativity and passion about something like shared leadership and power of the electorate. It can be such a variety of viewpoints for such a subject, it really makes this project exciting. This week has been a week of skills. I have learned to develop new skills to help me with my work in class. I have developed such skills as how to read for information, how to comprehend what I'm reading, how to make connections to what I'm reading and how to take better notes on what I'm reading. Reading for information has been important because I need to find certain things that help clue towards the main message and story behind my book. It's also important in helping out with my other skills, reading and finding certain information helps me make better connections and take better notes which helps with my comprehension of the book. It's really a whole new interdependent system of skills that help me with my work. Comprehension is very important. This is because if I don't understand what I'm reading how could I make connections or take notes? It wouldn't be easy without comprehension. To help me comprehend I use my notes to look back at certain moments of the book and link them with what I am reading at the very moment. That's also a part of the interdependence of the skills. Making connections is something I've also learned to do recently. To make connections is to help myself get immersed into the story. The interdependence of the skills that has to do with connection would mainly be comprehension. If I understand what the story is saying then I can easily connect to it. This is also made easier with notes. Taking notes has been very important as well. It'll not only help me in the long-run with my presentation but it helps with the comprehension of the whole story as well as keeping track of the information I have found useful and important within my book. Like I said, they're really all interdependent on one another. This week a big topic in class has been shared leadership. To me, shared leadership is important because it's vital to share the responsibilities of being a leader. It can be stressful and very difficult to be the leader of a group or anything by yourself because you as a one owns up to all the responsibilities and if something goes wrong it's only on you even if the problem has nothing to do with you. An example of that is in business class we watch The Apprentice with Donald Trump and a contestant named Kwame was in the finals and he had to manage a Britney Spears concert and he hired a past contestant named Omarosa and he delegated the job of Britney's travels with her and Omarosa ended up losing her luggage and didn't get a limo driver to the airport in time. That mistake was made by Omarosa but with Kwame being the leader he didn't win the challenge mainly because of that mistake. This week we also picked new books to read and there are some interesting options. Personally, I'm not a fan of being forced to read books and it makes it even more difficult for me to get fully immersed into the book and the story it's telling. The last books we had to read and do the BQ paper on was very hard for me to get into but I forced myself to read through the book and work hard to get my grade up in this class. I finished with a C in the first marking period and all A's in my other classes so this class is definitely my hardest personally. I think that's mainly because I don't see myself as an english student. In week 5 we just got back from winter break and we had a shortened week with having Monday off. We turned in our TIB Digital Stories and I was pretty disappointed in mine but I wanted it turned it before it was known as late. I had some issues with my video when it somehow got deleted after I had it saved and done. After that I was in a time crunch and I had little motivation to start over completely and make it really good again. I felt bad for that but I just wanted to get in on time. This week I also heard everyone's topics of their stories and some were really interesting. I liked Eric's about the connections between people and how technology and social media is coming between that. I liked the examples we were shown in class and they really inspired me to be truly passionate in my TIB story. We also had a very interesting creative writing prompt this week with it being "Who are the people you have loved?" That's a very deep prompt if you think about it.You may have loved people that you can't stand anymore or you have lost without reasoning or before you had a chance to truly make the most out of your love. It's an interesting topic and I found myself very fond of the piece I wrote for it. I wrote quite a lot about it and it made me realize how much I've given and received so far in my life and it got me thinking about the fact that some of the people I will love most in my life I probably have never met. That's scary. Today everyone is seen through social media and interacted with through the internet. This trend has created a barrier between people and communication. In society today connections aren't a real thing. It's "Did you see so and so's tweet?" It's kinda sad looking at people slowly losing their communication and people skills. There's so much interaction that could be happening between people that we all miss. People were made to be social. We just need to realize that there's more to life than likes and followers. I learned about more about how to connect than actual lessons. I look at things a little more differently when I started to truly realize how little connections there were in real life between people. In class it also came very apparent and clear that High School is close to being over and I'll be moving onto the next chapter in my life. I don't quite know how the next part of my life will play out but I have an idea on what I'll be doing. I plan on taking a year off of school and pursuing my dreams of becoming a photographer. I love photography and fine a lot enjoyment in taking and viewing pictures. A picture can say a million words and a thousand stories. I love what they can mean, for example, my family has a picture of the family without being visible it's still up in every house. My great grandpa who at the time was in his 80's took the picture and got his thumb in the shot and made the rest of the family not visible. But, in the circumstance we decided to keep it and remember the day. To anyone else that picture would like a messed up picture where someone got their thumb in the way, so why keep it? Well, to us.. it has meaning. This week's blog we were given the option of just blogging about the class as a whole so far. Personally this class has been big to me, I've enjoyed the way we view things, it's quite deeper than how I usually look at things. This class has mainly exposed me to the ideas of connection and how important they are in our life today. In today's society it's more who you know rather than what we know, thus creating more vitality to person to person connections. We've done several projects in this class and they haven't been too hard although I am a slow worker when it comes to English I have been finding myself enjoying our projects but I have been late turning them in. I've also been sick and missed a lot of class and that has made certain things very difficult because I haven't been able to find much time to talk to Mr. Schoenborn about some questions that I have. I have felt bad about turning things in late and missing class because I do really like this class but I have trouble turning in work that doesn't quite match my standards. Reading has gone well and I enjoyed my SSR book a lot! I found yet another book that I can actually be immersed in and enjoy myself reading it. Our BQ books that we're reading is going quite opposite, I've found it difficult to get into the book but I'm powering through to get the paper done because I like the topic of my paper. It has to do with love and if it is a big reason for our lives. To me, personally love is one of the greatest things on Earth. It's a feeling that can't be matched. It's truly beautiful. This week I've learned a lot and it was great. As a class we learned about our This I Believe essays and we heard plenty of examples. I learned that I have plenty of stories to tell and so does everyone else. I believe that it's great for everyone to share their stories and be passionate about what they believe in to easily connect with people. Connections between us would be great for people in our class considering most people don't know each other that well even though we've been going to school together for most of our lives. Interactions between people is becoming very important today in our society considering the advancements in technology. I chose to do my "I believe" essay on music. Everything about it, including how it can influence people's decisions and feelings. Which is all based on how people interpret the music, to me it's like a very complicated puzzle. A group of people can all listen to the same song and feel differently about it, just because of how they interpret it. If someone focuses more on the beat of the music they may feel differently than the person that focuses on the lyrics. To me it's very important to listen to music because of what it can do for you. I've had many personal encounters with music personally influencing me and shaping and molding me into who I am today. In the third week I have learned a lot about writing and myself as a writer. I learned that an essay in a conversational style is a lot different than any other form of writing. It's difficult and makes you feel obligated to get a lot more personal with your stories to try to connect with the readers. I also learned that getting personal in an essay and telling stories that mean a lot to you and you may not be open to telling is a lot more challenging than i first thought. I learned that to get personal you need to take a second and think about how much you care about what you're writing and I thought that the topic of essay being a belief of ours was one of the best possible ways to get personal. If it's a belief of mine then I truly believe in and care about what I'm writing about. I also learned to try to and overcome some fears or awkward feelings of having to record and hear my own voice. It's always been weird to hear my own voice but I learned to grow comfortable with it considering everyone else in the class has to do the same thing, it's a sort of comfort knowing I'm not the only one who's responsible to record my own voice. I learned about digital story telling and all the characteristics of it. Some people that we watched or read about have developed an idea of the proper way to digitally tell a story and I found that very interesting because I never knew about all the things that are needed to tell a story. They said that everything is done to appeal to the readers senses. You can say or show something and it can appeal to senses. Such as creating the spelling of sounds to add effect to an action that was done. |
